Description and background
The Port Authority Library is located in Palazzo San Giorgio, in the "Porticus duganae" room, a part of the structure built in 1444.
It was gen. Stefano Canzio, the first president of CAP, the Independent Consortium of the Port of Genoa (now the Port Authority), who requested the library in 1903. He was the one who insisted on purchasing a set of books, as indicated in a document from the Port Committee of 1905, in order to create a library that would contain writings about the history of Banco di San Giorgio, the port, the city of Genoa and, above all, the laws and regulations about navigation in effect at that time.
The CAP bought thousands of books, including valuable sixteenth-century editions and volumes about the Free Port and Banco di San Giorgio.
The more than 8 thousands books are being computer catalogued at this time.
A search engine is being developed to identify the books available in the library using keywords.
